Judge Judy is a lawyer, judge, television personality, and author. Since 1996, Judge Judy has presided over her own successful syndicated reality courtroom series, Judge Judy.
Judge Judy passed the New York Bar examination in 1965, and became a prosecutor in the family court system. In 1982 Mayor Ed Koch appointed her as a judge, first in criminal court, then later as Manhattan’s supervising family court judge in 1986.
It was reported in the summer of 2012 that Judge Judy is the highest paid television personality, making $123,000 per day, which amounts to $45 million a year. In the fall, it was reported that she makes more money than any celebrity other than Lebron James.
Judge Judy has been interviewed on numerous talk shows and cable news programs since beginning the Judge Judy show. Also as a result of her Judge Judy show stardom, she served as a judge for the 1999 Miss America Pageant. In December 2009 Judge Judy told the story of her life and career in Family Court, as well as Judge Judy and her published works in a two-hour interview for the Archive of American Television.
